Description:
This content includes three presentations that share the speakers' stories of substance use disorder lived experience, including experiences with stigma, harm reduction methods, and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) / Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) as best practice when possible. A Naloxone training, provided by the Egyptian Health Department, concludes the material. The goal is to increase participants' knowledge of and awareness of personal and community stigma towards persons with substance use disorders, as well as harm reduction methods and MOUD/MAT as best practice and the corresponding positive impacts on morbidity and mortality rates.

ACCREDITATION: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and SIH SUPPORT Grant Program. The SIU School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

American Academy of Nurse Practitioners National Certification Program accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by the ACCME.

SIU School of Medicine is preapproved as a continuing nursing education provider pursuant to Section 1300.130, subsection c), 1), B) and P) of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation Nurse Practice Act. Nurses may receive a maximum of 2.25 contact hours for completing this activity.

Objectives: At the conclusion, learners will be able to:
  1. Identify stigma associated with drug use and addiction.
  2. Describe harm reduction as best practice for wellness.
  3. Empower people to define their personal recovery through harm reduction education and connection.
  4. Explain the impact of legal and illegal opioids in their community.
  5. Recognize the signs of an overdose.
  6. Access and administer life-saving, opioid reversal medication.
