Description:
A nonfatal opioid overdose is one of the strongest predictors of future overdose and death, yet it also represents a critical opportunity for intervention. This continuing education program explores the evidence-based clinical management of patients following opioid overdose, providing healthcare professionals with practical strategies to identify substance use disorders, assess risk factors for recurrent overdose, and implement interventions that save lives. Participants will review validated screening tools, DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders, and the clinical factors associated with overdose recurrence, including mental health comorbidities, polysubstance use, high-risk prescribing patterns, and exposure to fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.
Dr. Katherine Welter is an Assistant Professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine with board certification in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. Since joining Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) Division of Hospital Medicine in 2018, she has led and participated in quality improvement and research projects related to treatment of substance use disorders (SUD) in hospitalized patients. She successfully implemented the NMH inpatient addiction consult service in 2023 and currently serves as its director. In 2025, the team launched the Substance Use Treatment & Engagement Program (STEP) Clinic, to bridge patients with SUD to long-term care. Additionally, she co-leads the Interdisciplinary Network for SUD Improvement Team (INSITE), which focuses on education, clinical care, and research related to patients with SUD. Since 2025, she has worked with infectious disease colleagues to develop more integrated infectious disease care for patients with substance use disorders during hospitalization and connection to outpatient care. Dr. Welter also co-leads the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine medical student and resident addiction medicine selectives and has spoken nationally on topics related to addiction medicine.
