Description: The Safe Opioid Prescribing series consists of 10 online modules, each approximately 30 minutes in length, collectively fulfilling 5 hours CME credit for medical providers and pharmacists. In the nineth module, Dr. Camille Dunkley provides a comprehensive overview of the neurobiology, assessment, and diagnostic framework for opioid use disorder (OUD). Learners explore the brain structures and pathways involved in addiction, including the basal ganglia, limbic system, and prefrontal cortex, and how these drive the stages of intoxication, withdrawal, and preoccupation. The presentation reviews biological, genetic, and environmental contributors to addiction, introduces validated screening tools (ORT, SOAPP-R, COMM, PMQ), and outlines DSM-5 criteria for diagnosing OUD. Emphasis is placed on recognizing addiction as a chronic relapsing disease requiring ongoing assessment and treatment engagement.
