Description: The Safe Opioid Prescribing series consists of 10 online modules, each approximately 30 minutes in length, collectively fulfilling 5 hours CME credit for medical providers and pharmacists. In the seventh module, Dr. Amanda Mullins explores the critical role of drug toxicology in opioid risk mitigation. It reviews the purpose and methods of drug screening—including urine, blood, and saliva testing—and emphasizes how appropriate interpretation supports patient safety and treatment outcomes. Learners will understand detection windows, metabolizer phenotypes, false positives and negatives, and the importance of confirmatory testing. The session highlights how drug monitoring supports risk mitigation strategies such as compliance verification, identification of misuse or diversion, and informed clinical decision-making in opioid therapy.
