Description: This lecture will review the current information about cardiovascular and renal protective effects of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists in type 2 diabetes. It will review the current CV risk statistics in type 2 diabetes; define the FDA mandate for cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOTs) with new diabetes drugs; describe the clinical characteristics and results of these CVOTs with SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists; describe recent changes in type 2 DM treatment algorithms.
