This series is designed to train providers in opioid prescribing best practices through 6 enduring online modules. These modules satisfy the 3-hour requirement in Opioid Safe Prescribing Practices by IDFPR to renew Controlled Substances Registration in Illinois.
Adjuvant analgesics have been proven to be effective in managing mild to moderate pain, despite being designed to treat other health conditions. In Module 2, Chris Herndon, PharmD, BCACP, of Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, discusses how adjuvant analgesics act in the pain pathways and which are considered first-line. He also discusses the risks and benefits of usage as well as the importance of adjuvant analgesic selection based on current guidelines and patient history.

Objectives:
At the conclusion, learners will be able to:
- Describe where adjuvant analgesics act in the pain pathways.
- State which adjuvants are considered first-line analgesics.
- Choose an adjuvant analgesic for a given patient, based on current guidelines and/or evidence-based medicine.
- Compare risks and benefits of different adjuvant analgesics for a given patient.
